Seeds of the Season

It may be May but there still seems to be no sign of the sun and What To Do In The Garden In May will have to drastically change as a result. Apparently this May could be one of the coldest in recorded history so don't be too quick to get those new seedlings in the ground, keep them in your greenhouse a little longer or keep protecting them, especially at night with Covers and Cloches so that you don't loose the growth you have created.

But even in this colder, wetter May, we are still seeing a lot of success in the garden. Some of the most hardy varieties of Lettuce and Rocket Seeds are showing exceptional growth which is allowing a lot of gardeners to harvest their own crops within six weeks of planting and the tomato seeds and carrot seeds need to be planted to ensure that we have the crop we expect later in the year. Asparagus are starting to rear their heads, but remember, you must make sure the first few shoots grow to a full bush rather than harvesting for eating, so that you maintain a strong, healthy crop throughout the summer. Take care with pests such as slugs and snails and keep your small shoots protected and build the soil up around them to encourage strong growth.

However much rain we have, the the hosepipe ban shows no sign of relenting so why not invest in your own Water Butt and make the most of this fowl weather so that when the heat does arrive, you will have plenty of fresh water for all your plants.

It seems ridiculous that with so much water around, the relevant authorities can’t... [Read more of this article]

Time To Start The Big Tidy Up

With strong winds and Autumn leaves falling, the annual tidy up of the garden is beginning early this year.
